Don't Waste Your Money: Social media posts can last forever

(Toledo News Now) – When you post a photo to Facebook it stays on your page until you remove it. However, it could live on for eternity in other places, even on other websites.

Almost everyone is on some social network site and no one reads the terms of service, all that fine print when you first join. Wait until you hear what you've been missing.

When you sign up for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Skype, you click the "agree" button, and are on your way to sharing your thoughts, photos and daily life. But Time magazine warns you are handing away your rights every time you do that.

For instance, Time says most social media sites have the right to use, delete, or publicly display your photos. With Facebook, you give the site permission to track websites you visit, even when you are not logged on to it.

From the doesn't that stink file comes the growing number of social media sites that won't let you delete things.

Time says Facebook holds deleted content for what it calls "a reasonable period of time." Twitter's Twitpic holds photos forever for legal reasons. Speaking of forever, Time says Skype won't even let you delete an account.

It's unlikely anyone is going to start reading the legal terms on Facebook's website, but it's good to keep in mind that when you post something to a social networking site you don't own it anymore. Post carefully so you don't waste your money.
