Huge south Toledo fire being investigated as suspicious

TOLEDO, OH (TOLEDO NEWS NOW) - Investigators are looking into the cause of a vacant house fire early Friday.

The blaze broke out around 1:30 a.m. on South Avenue near Hiett Street. Neighbors say the flames could be seen from blocks away.

The house is destroyed. An adjacent home, which was also vacant, is damaged.

Neighbors say the same house, which has been vacant about two years, was set on fire this past weekend as well. It will now be torn down.

Home owners expressed their concerns about the recent increase of vacant house fires.

"A fire decreases property value," said Melissa Greene. "It makes people feel less safe. It increases the blight in the neighborhood. I definitely think it has those types of negative effects."

Firefighters had to use a defensive strategy, meaning they would only attack the fire from the outside.
