City council president speaks on mayor’s proposal to raise pay for top officials

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - City Council President Joe McNamama spoke out on the mayor's proposal to raise pay for top city administrators. McNamara said the mayor's office has key questions to answer before he will consider supporting the measure.

McNamara sights a need to retain top talent for administrative personal and points to a study that shows Toledo pays less than cities of its similar size and other communities in the area.

The mayor wants to increase the pay ranges for executive exempt employees by roughly 20% while also adjusting health care and pension pick up benefits to mirror recent union contracts.

So far the proposal has received a cool reception from council. McNamara calls it a tough sell.

"The unions took concessions. We have a very lower number of police officers per population. We're behind in our road paving and we still have a structural imbalance in our budget so yeah it's a bad time," said Joe McNamara.

The proposal was originally suppose to be heard Thursday at the finance committee hearing however that was pushed back to the committee of the whole.
