Lourdes University sees record high youth enrollment

SYLVANIA,OH (Toledo News Now) – Lourdes University welcomed a record number of young people to their campus this fall. In the past, the school was primarily known for having older, "nontraditional" students, but that seems to be changing.

Lourdes set forward a strategic plan in 2008 aiming to recruit traditional-aged students out of high school or other colleges.

The plan appears to have worked. The university saw a 32 percent increase in the number of new, full-time, traditional-aged students since last fall, which is an all-time high.

Lourdes has added residence halls and a new athletic facility should be on the way.

It has also expanded recruitment. Lourdes used to recruit within a 15-mile radius. Now they recruit as far as Puerto Rico. Students have come to northwest Ohio from states as far as Texas and Alaska. Additionally, more students from all over Ohio and Pennsylvania have enrolled.

"These students are just wonderful. They bring so much energy to our campus. I think they keep us all young. I think they keep us all alive and challenged, and I am so, so excited about what they're going to bring not only to Lourdes University, but to the Sylvania community," said Roseanne Gill-Jacobson, vice president of Student Affairs.

Gill-Jacobson said word of mouth has also helped with recruitment because as more students come to the university, they are likely to bring along friends.
