North Baltimore students start school year with new schools

NORTH BALTIMORE,OH (Toledo News Now) - Summer came to a close as kids headed back to school in North Baltimore Wednesday, which included going to a new facility.

After five years and almost $21 million, the dreams of a community finally became a reality in the Wood County village.

The hallways of North Baltimore's brand new middle and high schools are full of students and excitement.

"Our faculty and students are ecstatic. We've had a wonderful beginning to our new era in North Baltimore school history," said Principal Dr. Bob Falkentstein.

In addition to air conditioning, everything is now on one floor, as opposed to the old two-story building. Plus, the space is better utilized.

"We have our computer labs in the actual corridors with operable walls inside on several of our classrooms, so that we can provide inquiry-based learning to our students. We combined our cafeteria and auditorium into an ‘auditeria.' We like to say that it is an auditorium first and then lunchtime, we turn it into a cafeteria," explained Falkentstein.

The school also boasts a brand new gym, which includes a unique student and pep band section, and a much-improved weight room.

"Our old weight room was in an old shower, an old locker room from like the 40s and 50s. So we have a new, all-glass window you can see through, mirrors, rubber floor. [It's] very accessible to kids and a lot nicer than we've had in the past," said Bradlee Rowlinson, athletic director.

Students, teachers and school administrators agreed the school would not have been possible without support from the community.

"I'm just so proud of the community for coming behind this project and supporting it. And I think it's going to be a facility that just absolutely serves our community so well for many, many years to come," said Superintendent Marlene North.
