TPS school year starts Tuesday with 2 new schools

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) – It is time for Toledo Public School students to head back to school. Classes start Tuesday and two schools are opening their doors for the first time.

Administrators and teachers are excited about the new facilities for Pickett and Longfellow, but said they also have a lot of work to do before classes start.

"I'm excited about the kids seeing the building and looking at their faces as they see all the wonderful new things that we have here," said Venice Haynes, a fourth-grade teacher.

Haynes is putting the finishing touches on her classroom and unpacked numerous boxes from the old Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary. That building is where students and staff spent the year while waiting for the new Pickett to be built.

"We were really excited, and we just couldn't wait until we got our own building done because it was home, but not really home," said Haynes.

Amanda Weygand is starting her first year as a special education teacher in the district.

"I've gotten to know a lot of the teachers here. They've been so willing to work with me. They've helped me get a lot of supplies that I need," said Weygand.

Weygand said she is excited to use the new technology in the building, like high-tech projectors.

"This building is amazing. You walk in the room and the lights turn on. I mean, it just has so much. The technology in this room is great," explained Weygand.

Weygand and Haynes said they hope to tie up lose ends by Tuesday morning, but said the beginning of the year is what they look forward to most.

"I'm ready for them to get here and get started, so they get to know me, and I get to know them," said Weygand.
