TPS administrator accused of inappropriate discipline could be fired Tuesday

TOLEDO, OH ( Toledo News Now) - Assistant principal at Spring Elementary in North Toledo Sandra Meeks Speller will learn her fate Tuesday as Toledo Public School board members could vote to fire her for insubordination and getting physical with students.

Sandra Meeks Speller is a 16 year veteran of Toledo Public Schools as a teacher and administrator. Meeks was suspended with pay on August 8 for her alleged actions over the past three years.

As assistant principal at the former Deveaux Middle School, an investigative hearing officer said Speller was rude and disrespectful. Speller then accepted a transfer to Spring Elementary, but the investigation alleges even worse behavior after the transfer.

Hayley Tallent is a senior at Start High School and thinks Speller should be fired. Tallent went to Deveaux when it was a middle school and says Speller was known for that kind of behavior.

"She would have them like up against the wall. She would grab people by their shoulders and arms and would yell at them for like really no reason," said Tallent.

According to the report, when a complaint was filed by parents that Speller grabbed a child and twisted his arm, Speller did not deny it but said "he should not have ran up by me."  When a student claimed her parents hit her with a fishing pole and the parents asked what she should do, Speller allegedly said "the next time instead of using a fishing pole use a baseball bat."

The investigation talks about incidents with two other Spring School students alleging Speller grabbed one of the students by the back of the neck and bent him over and screamed for him to be quiet, all while the first student was in a headlock.
