TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - It's hard to believe, but in a few weeks, students will be back in school. The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library is confident that those youngsters who participated in our annual Summer Reading Club will go back with higher proficiency in reading.
Statistics have continued to show that reading loss occurs in the summer months when children are away from the classroom and not participating in a formal reading program like our Summer Reading Club. Between grades 1 and 6, the potential cumulative impact of this achievement gap could be one and a half years worth of lost reading development.
And even though this year, more than 18,000 people participated in our program, this only represents 11 percent of Lucas County schoolchildren.
If your family hasn't visited the library this summer, there's still time to come in and check out a few great books. It's never too late to encourage the daily reading habit that will help your kids succeed. And why not make that a goal for next summer? Get your children and grandchildren to the library and see their reading scores shine bright!
