Puppies needing a home after rescue from puppy mill

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) - They are cute, cuddly and need a home. A raid on a puppy mill in Shelby, Ohio earlier this week turned up 250 Chihuahuas and 40 shar-peis.

The animals were living in cramped cages and pens covered in their own waste at the Central Ohio Kennel. The puppy mill was run by a husband and wife. The husband is dead and the wife is now in hospice.

"I just think it got away from them. So unfortunately, these animals were left in not ideal conditions," said Debbie Johnson of the Toledo Area Humane Society.

The rescued dogs have been shipped to various agencies across Ohio to be nursed back to health and put up for adoption.

The eighteen at Toledo's Humane Society have skin, eye and flea problems but all are expected to survive.

"I would say in general this is not the worst condition that we've seen. But typically they're very poorly housed. Lots of disease. At least we're lucky the illnesses these animals have are very treatable," said Johnson who expects the dogs to be ready for adoption in a week.

Adoption cost will depend on size and age of the dog.

To follow their progress or to adopt one of the dogs, go to the Humane Society's web site and Facebook page.
