Family reacts to shooting at Moody Manor apartments

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) – Family members of two children who were shot in a central Toledo apartment complex are calling the shooting a "senseless act of violence." One has died from the shooting and another remains in serious condition.

Family members of Leondra and Keondra Hooks say they are still trying to process everything that's happened in the last 12 hours. The family says it's relying on the community for prayers, support, and information that will help police bring justice to the shooter.

"There were gunshots and my grandmother didn't know there were gunshots until she began to feel glass on her leg. And she told the children to get down and everybody in the house to get down. But by the time she told them to get down, she realized that the baby had been shot," said Tamatha Hamilton, the girls' aunt.

That baby was 1-year-old Keondra Hooks. She was shot in the head. Her sister, 2-year-old Leondra, was also hit.

Relatives say it was a shock to first see them in the hospital.

"Love to play. Don't stop for nothing. They got more energy than the Lord allow. But I love them with all my heart and I feel as though they could accomplish so much in the world if only they had a chance. And somebody robbed them from that," said Bernice Neal, an aunt to the girls.

Ever since the call came in last night, family members have been camped out at the hospital trying to make sense of everything.

"If there was a reason, it would make more sense, and people would have ways to cope with it. But how can you cope with it when you don't know why? you don't know nothing," said Neal.

Family members are tired, angry and heartbroken after losing Keondra. They say they have to keep fighting for justice on the outside, as Leondra fights for her life inside a hospital room.

According to the family, Leondra is still in serious condition with doctors saying she may not be able to walk again.

The family says they know that someone out there knows something and are hoping the community will step up to put those responsible behind bars.

"You not gonna tell me don't nobody know nothing about a 1-year-old and a 2-year-old. One fighting for her life, and the other fought for 11 hours and died. Don't nobody know nothing?" said Neal.

Neal says she and the rest of her family have a message for the shooter.

"Y'all hurt two innocent babies that ain't even had a chance to do nothing. They never hurt a soul. And I feel as though they should have a chance to even have justice to the person that did this to them," said Neal.

Until then, family members say they'll be waiting and praying.

Police believe two people may be involved with the shooting. Anyone with information should call CrimeStopper at 419-255-1111.
