Lake levy passes, administrators happily get to work

MILLBURY, OH (Toledo News Now) – On Tuesday night, voters approved the Lake Local School District levy for 6.75 mill, after two failed levy attempts last year.

Voters finally said yes and it has school administrators breathing a sigh of relief.

"It just really lets us start with a sense of relief and kick off the year in a positive way," said Lee Herman, Lake High's principal.

The levy will create $1.47 million for the schools annually. The additional funds will hold any budget cuts, but it does not allow the district to hire more teachers or staff. Instead, the extra funds will go into the general fund, which pays for bills, salaries and supplies.

The levy narrowly passed with around 137 votes making the difference. The superintendent said with the levy behind him, he can get back to what matters most.

"I've been doing nothing but educational tasks at my desk, as opposed to levy, and building, and insurance, and things like that," said Superintendent Jim Witt.

The levy guarantees money for the next three years, but beyond that things are uncertain. Once the levy is officially passed, the district will resend the request for an additional levy this November.
