Lake principal turned away from polls due to shirt choice

LAKE TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) - Voters in Lake Township are deciding on the district's 6.75 mil operating levy and this morning one voter was turned away because of the shirt he was wearing.

"She said it's a Lake issue on the ballot and because it said lake on my shirt I would not be allowed in," said Lake High School principal Lee Herman. Herman was told that in order to vote he had to turn his shirt inside out, take it off or leave.

The woman running the polls said she was confident with her decision not to allow people wearing lake branded clothing into the polling area and when she called the Wood County Board of Elections to clarify the law, they backed her up.

The Secretary of State of Ohio has stepped in and overruled that decision. They explained that what's not legal is campaigning or wearing something that tells people to vote one way or another.

School board president Tim Krugh says he's confident voters will support the levy and it will go through even after the issue this morning. If by chance this doesn't pass, Krugh said the district may file a complaint with the Wood County board of elections or the Ohio attorney general.
