Lake Schools levy supporters hold divine intervention

LAKE TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) – Voters in the Lake Local School District will decide if they want to approve a new levy or reject it Tuesday. Since rejection has been the trend in recent years, a "divine intervention" took place Monday night in attempts to get the levy passed.

A mixture of school administrators, staff, parents and children came together for the event. Organizers admit it is a different way to rally support for a levy, but they say it's fitting after what the community has been through.

Reaching out to God for help was the focus of the community prayer service, just one day after opening the brand new Lake High School, and one day before voters decide the immediate future of the district.

School leaders say a 6.75 mill levy must pass Tuesday, or they may have to approve major cuts that have longlasting effects.

"I'm always confident going into one of these. I just believe that you play to win, and you are confident, and you give it your best shot, and you deal with things as they fall out if you need to," said Jim Witt, Lake Schools' superintendent.

The last two levies in August and November of last year were both defeated.

"We are here humbly seeking you, requesting the voters to vote for the Lake school levy tomorrow, that their yes vote really will be for the investment in our children and of our young adults," said Jim Bunke, a former Lake High student.

Levy organizers say they have targeted parents who have not come out to vote for the previous levies, and a little help from above won't hurt.

"We want to really try to reach out and really ask God to bless those people who are, unfortunately, who maybe don't have jobs. And we really do feel like this is really in God's hands," said levy support organizer Frank Mihalik.

Expect to see supporters of the levy at the polls Tuesday in one last push for "yes" votes.
