Lake Schools hopes third time's a charm for levy

LAKE TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) - The future of Lake Local Schools is on the line Tuesday.

The district is trying for a third time to get an operating levy passed.

The request comes the same week the district officially opens it's new 25 and a half million dollar high school, replacing one destroyed two years ago by a killer tornado.

But some voters apparently think the operating levy will pay for the new school.

It won't.

"I'm not sure where it comes from that it's being used to pay for the new high school. That is as untrue as untrue can be," said District Superintendent Jim Witt.

Witt says the district has been a good steward of taxpayer money.

Still, some touring the new school remain skeptical.

"I believe the school district has enough money as it is right now. I don't believe in supporting school levies," said Lake parent Chris Anello.

So why will the third time be the charm?

"We've made a concerted effort to target our parents. The last couple of times we've had a large chunk of parents who did not vote," said Witt.

The operating levy is for 6.75 mills.

Close to 1 and a half million dollars will be generated in the first year.

That will cost the owner of a $100,000 home $200.00.

Backers say it's worth every penny.

"We've got to be able to run the school and we can't do it without the support of everybody in the community," said Lake parent Jenny Pratt.

"Unfortunately, we're not getting a lot of government assistance like we used to and we need to take care of each other," said parent Deb Vandyk.

District leaders say they're planning on the levy passing.

That's why they're not discussing any potential cutbacks if it fails.

After double overtime, the Toledo Walleye came out on top and beat the Indy 3-2 Thursday night for a sweep in the series. Even though the fish had a 3-0 lead in the first round playoff series, the toughest thing to do in hockey is to beat a desperate team on their home ice.  Halfway through a second overtime Kyle Bonis sets up Christian Hillbrich to score the game winning goal.  The Walleye now advances to the second round.
