LAKE TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) - Lake Local Schools are offering media tours Wednesday to see inside the new Lake High School.

The school was destroyed in a tornado June 5, 2010. The new school is built on the same grounds.

The school has nearly 145,000 square footage and was completely funded through insurance money. It cost $25.5 million to build.

School officials did not want any features too flashy, they just wanted the basic necessities for a good education that was practical and efficient. The gym has an arena seating and classrooms are state-of-the-art. The school even has a new auditorium.

"When the whole thing started, we thought the odds were, odds were long, in getting here in two years. But we also knew that we felt that we owed that to our students and to our staff and to our community. So to watch the entire project progress has been gratifying," said Jim Witt, Lake High School superintendent.

To some, it is more than just bricks and mortar, it is a home.

"The first time we came in after we moved in, it just felt great. It felt like we were home, that we were back in Lake High School," said Tim Krugh, Lake Local School Board president.

The media got the first preview inside Wednesday. The public will be given tours Sunday at an open house. School starts Aug. 21.

"What I'm going to do is try to position myself in a place where I can see the kids walk in, because I want to see the looks on their faces," said Witt.

The school board voted this morning to approve a levy on the November ballot for 6.75 mill. There is a levy on the August ballot, but just in case that levy fails, they wanted a backup on the next ballot.
