MAUMEE, OH (TOLEDO NEWS NOW) - Darryl Stipes was murdered earlier this summer at his home in Sylvania Township.

No arrests have been made in the case.

But police are on the lookout for two suspects--one white, the other black.

Stipes was one of the most respected and well known drummers on Toledo's music scene. He most recently played with Josh Boyd and the VIP Band.

"He was one of the best drummers in town. Confident. Get it going on, was always in synch. The greatest" says Boyd.

That's why bands across the area donated their time Sunday at the "Justice for Darryl" benefit in Maumee.

Friends, family and especially fans of Stipes came to enjoy a spaghetti dinner and participate in a silent auction and raffle.

Stipes biker buddies even held a poker run in his honor.

"Darryl had a heart of gold. He had a passion for drums. Passion for music. He had a passion for wanting to entertain" says Stipes nephew Rick Angel.

All the money raised is going into a reward fund.

"We are putting the reward fund up there to bring the killers to justice. We feel if we can have a little peace of candy out there, someone can come and say something, let it slip out who did this to Darryl" says "Justice for Darryl" organizer Dee Lynn.

Stipes chilling final words before he died were heard on a 9-1-1 tape.

Friends say he didn't deserve to die the way he did.

"That man had such a great heart. I don't see how anybody could do that to him" says Lynn.

A "Justice for Darryl" fund has been set up at Fifth Third Bank.

If you have any information about the murder, contact Sylvania Township Police at 419-882-2055.
