TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) – A new charter high school will be coming to downtown Toledo this school year in the Lake Erie Building.

The school is called Nexus Academy of Toledo and is going to be in the heart of downtown at Jefferson and Huron. It will be the city's first blended college-preparatory high school, which means students will learn online, as well as in the classroom, giving them the best of both worlds.

Board members are looking for a specific kind of student.

"Rigorous, committed, self-driven," said Nexus Board President Rebecca Booth.

It will not be a typical classroom setting. Students will come in two shifts: four hours in the morning or four hours in the afternoon. After that, students will continue their education through online courses.

"By offering the online capabilities, as well as the in-house studies, they have the flexibility to pursue these outside interests," explained Booth.

The schedule is meant to provide a more personalized approach to individual learners. Only 300 students will be accepted. If applications exceed that, names will be drawn at random from a lottery. Classroom sizes will also be small with student teacher ratios at 25-to-1.

Board members said they chose Toledo to start a Nexus school because of the lack of charter high schools.

"We're trying to fill a gap that exists and give the students of Toledo another option. If they're aiming to go to college, this will allow them to get there a little quicker and with a little more personal approach to their high school education," said Mickey Revenaugh, executive vice president of Connections Education.

Nexus will offer a fitness center, AP courses, and 13 foreign language classes. Each student will also be provided with a laptop.

"If you wanna just get by and just glide right on through high school, this isn't the place," said Booth.

Information sessions are held every Wednesday on the fifth floor.
