TPD: PA attempted abduction evidence camera systems solve crimes

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Police say a recent attempted abduction caught on police surveillance camera video is a prime example of how Toledo's new real time camera network will keep the public safe, and help police solve crimes.

Chilling video released by Philadelphia Police earlier this week shows a man attempting to abduct a 10-year-old girl in broad daylight.  Lucky, the girl was able to get away. So did the suspect, until police checked the video.  Police say evidence from the video lead to the suspect's arrest.

"These brazen types of crimes can happen and right in the middle of the street like that," said TPD Sergeant Joe Heffernan. "It does help as far as investigations go. If something does happen, there's no better evidence than video."

Toledo's real time camera network is being constructed now, and Heffernan says he expects it will be completed by the end of the month.

"We're getting shipment in of the cameras and the equipment-- it's a lot more than just the cameras.  Because we have to have all the equipment that comes with the cameras and there's a lot of construction and engineering that has to be done at each location too," said Heffernan.

TPD has not released the locations of the 150 surveillance cameras that will be placed around the city. Heffernan says tweaks are still being made to the plan.
