Brain Drain: A WTOL11 Investigation

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

With summer time about half way over for children and teachers, parents are looking for a way to preserve, and even build on the knowledge learned last school year.  Several toys and games on the market can help to slow the ‘brain drain' that takes place every summer vacation.

Crayon Physics, a game for tablets and touch screen computers, requires certain science skills to be mastered as the child moves up in levels.

"It feels like it's all just a little game that any kid would play," said one student.

The Leap Pad tablet offers new e-books, something mom Laurie Schacht can help kids learn at their own pace.

"Their progress is actually assessed as they go through different activities and different games and the books will auto adjust to their level," said Schacht.

A new computer game from Animal Planet features augmented reality.

"They can watch a 3D version of behavior of in the habitat.  Then, they can go in the library. They can get all kind of facts about the animal," said

If children are spending too much time on the computer, the Kurio tablet offers controls on content and time limits on usage for up to 8 different profiles.

If outdoor activity is the goal, options include the Plasma Car, the Rockboard Descender, the green thumb garden set, Growums, a solar energy panels and the Kreo Battleship Missouri.

Toys feature in this story range in price from a few dollars to a few hundred.
