LAKE TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) - It has been more than two years since a tornado devastated the Lake Township area and destroyed the local high school.

Around this time two years ago, Lake High School was barely recognizable.

"That was more disheartening for me to see that than my own house, because I knew my house would be six or seven months, and that would be years," said resident John Pratt.

For parents like Pratt and students, like his sons, the wait is over. Construction on the new school is finally complete. The construction took about two years with most of the money coming from insurance or grants.

"I'm just glad to see our high school ready to go. When I drove by that school for the longest time and was just seeing rubble, it bothered me. Just because I knew it affected my kids and it affected our community," said Pratt.

Ever since the tornado hit, students have been using a temporary facility.

The new building is state of the art with new learning technology and has features designed to keep students safe during severe weather, according to the school district. The roof is reinforced with cement and some interior rooms are designed to protect against tornados.

"This has been the culmination of the work of many, many people working toward one common goal and it's coming to an end. And we're excited about that for our kids, our staff, and our community," said Superintendent of Lake Schools Jim Witt.

Witt said the most important part of the new building is the closure it will bring to the community.

"I know our kids and our staff are tremendously excited to be back on campus, to be back home. They've done a terrific job at our temporary facility the last two years. But you know, as the old saying goes, 'There's nothing like being home,'" said Witt.

Students will start using the new building this fall.
