Springfield Twp. man killed in storms

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) – The storms that have left thousands without power and many with damage to their homes, businesses and vehicles killed a Springfield Township man.

The Lucas County Sheriff's Department says 35-year-old Christopher Zimmerman of Dorcas Rd. left his house as the storm was approaching to move a newly purchased vehicle.  While Zimmerman was inside the vehicle a tree fell onto it, killing him.

"He was a good guy, he was more my brother's age, but uh, you know, just a good, hard working guy, you know, just trying to support his kids," said neighbor Justin Hallett.

"The family's dealing with their grief. They're getting a lot of support from their neighbors and the community. Springfield Fire and the sheriff's office are being compassionate to those situations the best that we can, and trying to help them out, aid them, and this is one family [struck] with an unfortunate situation," said a representative from the Lucas County Sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office believes the tree was the cause of death, but they are waiting on a complete autopsy to be done by the coroner's office.

The sheriff's office says the neighborhood the incident took place in was one of the hardest hit areas.

"It appears that we had a strong updraft, or some other type of heavy wind gust which uprooted several trees and the houses. Numerous power lines were knocked down," the sheriff's representative said.

The Sheriff's office stresses that your personal safety is the most important thing during storms.

"Seek shelter immediately, don't worry about superficial items such as cars [and] properties outside, you know those things can all be replaced," the representative said.

At this time there is a command center at the Springfield Township Administration Building, which is set up for anyone with any type of need.

Police have not yet released the victim's name.
