Sylvania Twp. shooting becomes murder investigation after victim dies

SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) – A pair of suspects are still on the loose after Sylvania Township's first homicide this year. A man was shot to death at his own home Thursday night.

It happened around 10:30 p.m. Thursday at Darryl Stipes' house located in the 3300 block of Waldmar Road near Central Avenue and Holland-Sylvania Road.

The 60-year-old victim was able to call 911 and even speak with an officer heading to the crime scene. Stipes told police he had been shot by two men. Police found him sitting on his front porch, but also found blood inside the home.

He died a short time later at a local hospital.

An autopsy determined Stipes was shot three times: twice in the pelvis and once in the chest.

Witnesses say they heard several gunshots. Police say a neighbor saw one suspect run away from the scene.

Police are looking into whether a fight in a pizza shop parking lot in May 2011 could be related to the shooting. Stipes told police he had bumped another man's car and the man, Frank Demarco, began yelling and pushed his car door, hitting Stipes in the face. Just last month Stipes filed a civil suit seeking damages.

Police are still looking for suspects and a motive in this case, but they say this does not appear to be random. They want to assure residents that there is no cause for concern because Stipes was a lone target.

"I can with almost 100 percent certainty tell people this wasn't random, that he was a selected target, and that there was motives that most people probably wouldn't be involved with regarding him," says Dept. Chief Ray Carroll with the Sylvania Township Police.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sylvania Township Police.
