Findlay buildings being demolished, creating lot

FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) - Four buildings in Dorney Plaza will soon be demolished, leaving historic downtown Findlay with a vacant lot.

Back in August 2007, flood waters created lasting problems in four historic buildings.

"The cost to restore these buildings and make them habitable exceeds the value of the buildings they are filled with mold and interior damage from the flood that just cannot be rectified," said Hancock County Commissioner Dr. Emily Walton.

Commissioners decided to tear the buildings down because of that damage.

"It's such a health hazard because of the mold issue it should be torn down," said Debbie Fraunfelter, who works at Red Wings Shoes across the street, and is glad to see the buildings go.

The buildings are in the heart of downtown, on Main Street, and knocking them down will create a vacant lot in the historic district. That is why commissioners must sign a covenant promising anything built will be a good fit for the area.

"It can't be just some box at some commercial restaurant it, it has to be something that would meet the department of interiors standards and guidelines for historic preservation," said the Director of the Hancock Planning Commission Bil Hompka.

As a part of the covenant, FEMA granted the project nearly $60,000 towards demolition and rebuilding. No date has been set for demolition to start and so far there are no immediate plans for the area. But commissioners say new buildings will be positive for the city.
