TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) – The Toledo Zoo announced Monday that Jeff Sailer would be taking over as the zoo's new executive director August 1.
The decision to hire Sailer comes after the zoo's current leader, Anne Baker, announced in February she would be retiring as soon as a replacement could be found. Baker has been the zoo's executive director since 2006.
"Mr. Sailer brings extensive zoo experience and is exceptionally qualified to direct the Toledo Zoo," said Zac Isaac, president of the Toledo Zoo's Board of Directors. "We're delighted to welcome him to our community and fortunate to have such a person in this important position as the Zoo moves forward."
Mr. Sailer holds a master's degree in zoology from the University of Florida and a bachelor's degree in biology from Ball State University and is currently the director of city zoos with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in New York, where he oversees Central Park, Prospect Park and Queens Zoos. Together the two attract more than 1.6 million visitors each year. Prior to joining WCS, Sailer was the curator of birds for the Miami Metrozoo.
"I am excited to accept this great opportunity. The Toledo Zoo has a wonderful reputation in the zoo field," said Sailer. "I'm looking forward to working with the staff of the Toledo Zoo and living in this wonderful community."
