Parks and recreation levy a step closer to council approval

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Toledo City Council on Thursday received its first in-depth update on a plan to place a 1-mill levy request before voters in November, to raise money for parks and recreation improvements.

It remains to be seen if council will approve placing the issue on the ballot. During a committee hearing, council heard from several people opposed to creating a new tax, such as Toledo Sherri Scott.

"I'm tired of the taxes, stop it," Scott said.

There was also some public testimony is favor of improving the parks and recreation infrastructure.

"Yeah, we need dedicated funds. If you all can't do it internally by forcing the administration to commit to it, then unfortunately we have to go externally to do it," Jan Scotland told council.

It's a 10-year request aimed at raising $3 million per year to upgrade recreational facilities and paying for programs. It's expected the average Toledo home owner would pay $18 per year.

A vote from council to decide if the issue will go before voters won't happen for another couple of weeks.
