TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Toledo City Council is considering a measure to sell the Sylvania Avenue police sub-station.
The measure was reviewed by Council's Economic Development Committee, and it calls for the city to receive $270,000 from Global Direct LLC, minus a 7 percent real estate broker fee.
The purchaser is an investor whose intended redevelopment is with an undisclosed user for a technical school or college.
Neighbors in West Toledo are concerned about a potential negative impact on public safety, and Councilman Tom Waniewski says while he supports the city to sell the building to raise some cash, the needs of the neighborhood should also be considered:
"Residents bring up a valid point. They like the station there. There's a presence of a police station, our RSVP patrol is there. The Blessed Sacrament neighborhood is very much in favor of keeping it there."
While the committee did not make a recommendation, a vote is likely on June 19. Council is asking the administration to try to negotiate keeping some police presence at the building if it's sold.
