BENTON TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) – Two people died in a head-on collision Thursday afternoon in Ottawa County. The crash occurred in Ottawa County on state Route 2 near Lickert-Harder Road.
Troopers say Michael Aten, 60, of Vermillion, was heading west on Route 2 in a Ford Escape around 12:45 p.m. He then went left of center, colliding head-on with a semi truck driven by Ricky Jackson, 52, of Struthers.
Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say they are not sure why the driver of the SUV went left of center, but do not think he was trying to pass anyone.
The roadway was closed for about five hours Thursday as crews worked to clean up the accident.
Route 2 has become notorious for fatal crashes in recent years, but the highway patrol does not seem to know why.
"ODOT has done a lot of work to include turning lanes and that. It's basically a straight stretch of roadway, so there's really not any curves or anything that could cause the fatals, but for some reason, yes, we have had several fatals out here," said Sgt. Michael Knoll with the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The crash is under investigation.
