Hazmat crews comb south Toledo building

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - A building in south Toledo was raided this morning, as local, county and state agencies were concerned about biological materials inside.

The building is located on the 1000 block of Broadway at Eastern. Toledo police executed an administrative search warrant at 1021 Broadway around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The search comes after a complaint by Toledo building inspectors who were inside the building recently.  The concern is that some type of medical or biological research is happening inside a building with no running water or other utilities.

The Toledo Fire Hazardous Material Team, Lucas County Health Department and the 52 Civil Support Team based in Columbus, entered the building just before noon Thursday to determine if any dangerous materials are inside the building.  The Civil Support Team brought in a mobile lab to test materials removed from the building.  A decontamination station has also been set up outside the building as a precaution.

"They are going into the building, the SWAT Team went in and secured it, and then they [health department officials] are going in and seeing what is inside.  They have [a decontamination team] just in case they need it," said Stacy Debruyme with the Toledo Lucas County Health Department.

"There are open containers, containers labeled ‘biological materials,' and that's a concern.  Supposedly the gentleman is involved in biological research," said Deputy Chief Thomas Jaksetic with Toledo Rescue.

Jaksetic says the condition of the building is also a concern.

"There are leaks in the roof, there is no electricity, there is no heat," said Jaksetic.

Crews have taken more than 300 photos inside the building to be analyzed. At this point, no materials have been removed from the building for testing.

The building owner is listed as the president of a company called Advanced Clinical Diagnostics.

A spokesman from the health department says the building has been used as a bio research lab in the past and they found a variety of chemicals inside, but nothing which poses a public safety threat. The building has been boarded up and the health department will be working with the owner to clean it up.
