Elderly woman recovers after being beaten by son

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) – An elderly Toledo woman is recovering tonight after she says she was badly beaten by her own son, who is now under arrest. Linda Arnold says she could have died.

"Mark was all I had in life, but I have nothing when he treats me like this. I have nothing," Arnold said.

The Lucas County Sheriff's office says the elderly woman showed up to the Springfield Township fire station one around 8 o'clock Tuesday morning. They say she was in bad shape and said her son had been abusing her.

Linda Arnold did not want to show her face, but she did show the results of abuse she has been enduring for years. Linda has huge bruises across her body and a gash on her head. Police say it is the work of her son, who she says has a drug problem, and can become violent.

"He even took a propane tank and tried to light our gas line and tried to blow us up," Arnold said.

Linda says her son went on a rampage Monday night inside the home they share, breaking her TV, stove, and nearly breaking her skull. When her son passed out this morning, Linda was able to sneak out to the nearby Springfield Township fire station for help.

"I had no choice but to get some help because I knew he'd kill me. He threatened to kill me last night," Linda said.

The Lucas County Sheriff's Office went to the home and arrested 46 year old Mark Wiler. He is charged with felonious assault and kidnapping to terrorize or inflict serious physical harm. Police say Wiler controlled Linda, stealing from her and forcing her to drive him to buy drugs.

Neighbors say this is not the first time there has been trouble.

"She tries to help him out as much as she could. She could've left him in jail several times before this but she got him out," said neighbor Norbert Klocinski.

Linda saw a doctor and is now recovering at home. She says she hopes her Wiler can receive the mental health assistance he needs.

"I hope they give him some help. I'll have to spend the rest of my life alone but I can't be beat," said Linda.
