Psychologist discusses gambling addiction prior to casino opening

TOLEDO, OH (TOLEDO NEWS NOW) - A clinical forensic psychologist says it's likely gambling addiction will increase in Toledo once a casino comes to town.

Dr. Charlene Cassel says it has happened in other cities that got a new gambling venue.

When it comes to gambling addictions, Dr. Cassel says males are more likely to get hooked on the table games like poker and roulette while women tend to gravitate toward slot machines.

While gambling can be fun, it can quickly get out of control, she says. And acknowledgement is the biggest concern.

"What I'm not sure of is how many people really will admit that they have an addiction. It's like any other addiction. One of the biggest issues is to acknowledge that you have a problem," she said.

A soft opening of the Hollywood Casino Toledo takes place for invitation-only guests on Thursday, May 24. It opens to the public on May 29.
