FREMONT, OHIO (Toledo News Now) - WSOS has expanded its summer cooling program, which will now offer cooling assistance for an additional month.
For the first time, the program will begin June 1st and run through August 31st. Qualified residents in Wood, Sandusky, Ottawa and Seneca Counties will receive up to $250 for an air conditioner and utility assistance, a $75 increase from available funds last year.
WSOS received $686,000 in funding for cooling assistance for the 2012 summer season. Last year, the organization was awarded $106,000. Leaders said the increased funding came from savings because of a mild winter season.
"Right now, with the economy, a lot of people are finding it hard to even purchase an air conditioner on their own. With them granting more money and broadening the eligibility requirements- we feel that we'll be able to assist a lot more households than we have in previous years," said Tony Lindenberger with WSOS.
Eligibility requirements have also been expanded to now include anyone with a disconnect on utility. Residents 60 and older or residents with a medical condition are still eligible, as well.
