MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) - Kroger is considering opening a new location in northwest Ohio. The new store would be its first location in Maumee at the corner of Dussel Drive and Conant Street.
Maumee's City Administrator John Jezak said Kroger has wanted to open a Maumee location for a while. It saw an opportunity at the former Schmidt's Chevrolet property, which has been vacant for several years.
City officials said the location, size of the property and zoning is perfect for a business like Kroger. Plans submitted to the city show Kroger would demolish the current building and build a new one.
A Kroger representative will attend a planning commission meeting May 30. If all goes well, Kroger will get a building permit and begin construction shortly after.
"It's a pretty strategic location for any retailer, and I think for Kroger it makes a lot of sense. It has one of the highest traffic volumes in the city of Maumee," explained Jezak.
Jezak said the new store would bring jobs to the area both in construction and retail.
