MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) – Adoption day is approaching. The big day for the "Suitcase 6" and their mother, Maddie, is less than a week away. The Toledo Area Humane Society will put the pets one step closer to their new homes Friday.
The application window closed Wednesday. The anxious applicants who hope to take home one of the dogs will only be kept waiting one more day. On Friday, the humane society will begin pulling applications at random and screening them.
The lottery-style adoption has been a complicated process. People interested in adopting had to specify on a special application if they wanted a puppy or the mother. They only had a six-day time period to do so.
During that time, 132 applications were submitted. Considering how high profile this case has been, the humane society said it is a little surprised by the number of applicants.
"When it comes down to actually filling out an application, coming in, making a little effort, the numbers do tend to drop off and that's fine. There's only six animals available. We don't need a thousand applications. With 132 applications, we'll find great homes for everybody," said John Dinon with the TAHS.
One of the Suitcase 6 has already found a home with the family that has been fostering him, his mom and siblings.
The humane society will notify the lucky applicants Friday with adoptions finalized Tuesday.
