SPRINGFIELD TWP., OH (Toledo News Now) - Michigan's largest furniture chain is hoping to expand into the Buckeye State, and it is bringing more than a hundred jobs with it.
Art Van Furniture is looking at the former Super Cinemas lot in Springfield Township for its first Ohio store.
The spokesperson for the Warren-based company said they are really excited, and she believes the company has found the perfect location for the expansion.
The Super Cinemas lot has been vacant for nearly five years. Leslie Kohli, the Springfield Township administrator, said the water damage inside and the building type made it difficult to sell. However, it looks as if Art Van could be moving in.
"They had a lot of business already being shipped to Ohio, so it made perfect sense to come to Ohio, so we're very excited about that," Kohli said.
The company signed a purchase agreement for the lot and are in the middle of due diligence.
"It's not a completely done deal, but we expect them to come in the office any day now with a site plan to be reviewed," Kohli said.
Kohli said it looks like Art Van would tear down the building and build a new one. They could also use parking lot space for another building they would lease out. The structure would be right across from Furniture Row in the Spring Meadows area.
"I think it'll bring more people in. They'll be able to shop back and forth between the two places, and it might make competition and make prices better too," said Cindy Studer. Studer works in the Spring Meadows area.
More business means more jobs for the area. An Art Van spokesperson said she expects 100 to 120 jobs to be created.
"It's a great idea. It will increase business in the area, and since I work around here, it would be better for everyone," Studer said.
Kohli said she hopes that is the case. According to the township administrator, there are about half a dozen other vacant buildings in the Spring Meadows area that have had people interested in developing them commercially.
"Once Art Van comes in, that'll be what sparks others to realize there is growth taking place, and then that growth will continue."
Art Van hopes to open the store in the spring of 2013.
