BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) - The mother facing charges in the death of her 3-month-old son made her first court appearance Monday. Even though she had an arraignment, authorities said the investigation is not over yet.
Rebecca Steinmiller, of Bowling Green, was arrested Friday on one count of endangering children. She had her arraignment Monday morning.
No formal plea was entered, but Steinmiller is being held on a $75,000 bond. She is also not allowed to have contact with her husband, the father, because authorities said they are still investigating what happened.
Investigators said it all started a few weeks ago when 3-month-old Carter Steinmiller died. The Wood County Sheriff's Office calls the death suspicious and has been investigating ever since. That investigation led to the arrest of the baby's mother, Steinmiller, who is also the daughter of Bowling Green's Fire Chief.
Steinmiller was not arrested in direct connection with her child's death. Authorities said their investigation shows baby Carter had a broken arm, which Steinmiller failed to report, which is a felony that could get her up to three years in prison.
The Wood County Sheriff's Office said it is still trying to figure out how and why the infant died. The sheriff said that information will come from the Lucas County Coroner's Report.
Steinmiller is scheduled for a preliminary hearing next Monday morning. Her case is being reviewed Wednesday to see if she has hired an attorney.
Deputies got a 911 that Steinmiller's son, Carter, was unconscious and not breathing. He later died at Wood County Hospital.
