Study: Not using turn signal twice as dangerous as distracted driving

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) – A new study finds drivers who do not use turn signals cause twice as many accidents each year as distracted drivers.

The study, conducted by the Society of Automotive Engineers, also revealed some surprising information about how often drivers use, and fail to use, turn signals.

According to the study, motorists do not use a turn signal, or fail to turn it off, about 48 percent of the time when changing lanes.  It also states that divers do not use a blinker a quarter of the time when making a turn.

"It's the law to use a turn signal," said Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn. "But it's there for a reason, because it does make our driving much safer when people use their turn signals."

Even if there is no accident, failure to use a turn signal is misdemeanor carrying a fine of around $100.
