Don't Waste Your Money: Affordable new cars to own

(WTOL) - New cars are more expensive than ever. With gas around $4 a gallon, running it is another big expense. But there are some cars that are cheap to buy and even cheaper to own.

If you need a new car this year, do not expect the bargains dealers were offering over the past three or four years during the dark days of the recession. Prices are up and incentives are down, but there are still some great values in cars if you are a savvy shopper.

With the average new car price now approaching $30,000, it is hard to find a car that is affordable and will stay affordable.

Kiplinger's magazine just named the cheapest new cars to own based on initial price, gas mileage, insurance costs, and trade-in values when you are done.

Making the grade for 2012:

  • Nissan Versa
  • Hyundai Accent
  • Ford Fiesta
  • Toyota Yaris
  • Kia Rio
  • Mazda 2
  • Scion IQ
  • Honda Fit

From the doesn't that stink file, a reminder that you will not get to haggle much on any of those cars. Small fuel sippers are in big demand with $4 gas prices, and dealers are not giving them away.

The same goes for small used cars as well; there is less negotiating room.

If you like to buy 1- or 2-year-old used cars, make sure you check out new cars too. With prices high on late model used cars, you may do almost as well buying new with a full warranty, so you don't waste your money.
