TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - A family who has outgrown its house understands how frustrating it can be to find a home that is the perfect size. That is a problem one local non-profit is facing now. The Ronald McDonald House on Monroe Street in west Toledo needs a bigger house because it is always jampacked.

For 30 years, the Ronald McDonald House has helped thousands of families who wanted to be close to their children when they are hospitalized in Toledo. However, there is a big problem.

"We just don't have the space for the families that need our help. We often use local hotels to put people up because we don't like turning anybody away," explained Chad Bringman, executive director of the northwest Ohio Ronald McDonald House.

On Thursday, the Ronald McDonald House launched an $8 million capital campaign to build a new 38,000 square foot house with twice the amount of rooms. It would be built right behind the current house.

"The alternative is sleeping in chairs and eating out of vending machines - things like that. This is a home away from home for them to be at while they're in Toledo," said Bringman.

In addition to more rooms, the new house would have a bigger kitchen and more areas for kids to play.

Jim Murray co-founded the original Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia in 1974. He said more families staying at the house is not necessarily bad.

"It's a tribute to the medical profession today because in the old days, the kids went to heaven a lot sooner. Now, with the different medicines and things, kids are actually coming back here," said Murray.

They are given a second chance at life.

So far, about one-third of the funds needed to make this project a reality have been pledged.

"It's gonna take a lot of people, a lot of different organizations, a lot of individuals, to help us pull this together for the families that need the Ronald McDonald House," said Bringman.

The Ronald McDonald House has a number of ways you can help.
