Daytime lane closings underway in Palmyra Township

PALMYRA TOWNSHIP, MI (WTOL) – The Michigan Department of Transportation is preparing for a major project that will begin soon on US 223 in Palmyra Township. Daytime closings have already begun, and the project will cause major delays.

In early April, those who drive on US 223 between Blissfield an Adrian will see a large number of orange barrels.

"We'll actually be replacing the bridge that is behind me right now, over the River Raisin.  And to do that, we'll be taking 223 down to one lane, maintained with a temporary signal." explained Karl Arend of MDOT.

Drivers who regularly use US 223 have seen this type of construction before. In the summer and fall of 2011, the highway was down to one lane in both directions around Lipp and Riga Highways for culvert replacement and road work. During that time, traffic was maintained by a temporary signal, and there were major delays.

MDOT says the work is necessary, and that it is part of a 5 year plan to replace the aging structure.

The work will be a huge issue for those heading to a state park or lake in the area for a summer trip, or those traveling to Michigan International Speedway.

MDOT is aware of the extra traffic this will cause for the two big race Sundays this summer, and will do what it can to relieve backups.

The project is expected to be completed by November. Once the new bridge is in, it should last 60-70 years.
