Homemade Herb: A WTOL11 Investigation

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – Synthetic marijuana, sometimes known as K2 or Spice, became illegal in Ohio last October, but now people are making a similar drug at home.

The synthetic marijuana is made in the kitchen using herbs and chemicals readily available at local stores.  Experts say using the drug can cause memory loss and loss of consciousness.  In one case, a teenage victim says she was sexually assaulted by a Missouri couple because of the drug.

"She was unable to tell the male suspect to leave her alone she was unable to move her body to be able to defend herself or to keep him off of her," said Steve Olinger, Macon Missouri Police Chief.

According to Dr. Ann Payne Johnson of the Baptist Memorial Medical Group, users are often young people.  "It's not necessarily routine drug users," said Payne.  "These are kids that are just experimenting with these things you know one or two times and bad things are happening to them."
