Lake High School thanks Owens Community College

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – When a tornado destroyed Lake High School on June 5, 2010, Owens Community College was there for the students.

The college allowed Lake students to use their athletic facility, known as the SHAC, for two years. Tuesday night, the Lake Flyers honored those who gave their teams a place to play.

Hours after a tornado destroyed the school, Superintendent Jim Witt received an offer from Owens to hold their graduation ceremonies and basketball games in their gymnasium.

At their final home game of the season, the Flyers took time to thank Owens for its generosity by presenting a plaque with the varsity boys team photo. Retired Owens President Dr. Larry McDougle and many others received Lake hats and t-shirts to commemorate the partnership.

"The college is Owens community college and I believe the most important word is community. And this was a marvelous opportunity to show that." said McDougle.

The new high school will be completed by the time students return in fall 2012, and the home court will be ready for the next basketball season.

"Many of the amenities in our new gymnasium will be similar to the one we are playing in now because our people like this so well. The lighting and some of the seating and the floor structure." Witt explained.

Both sides say they hope the partnership continues.
