City moves forward with plan to save recreation programs

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – The city of Toledo is moving forward with plans to install 11 new red light cameras in order to raise money for city recreation programs.

Those programs include city pools, such as a proposal for repairs to be made at Roosevelt pool, located on the 900 block of Dorr St. at Lawrence.

Roosevelt is one of the pools most likely to be making significant repairs and opening this summer.

Legislation that calls for spending $277,000 from the capital improvements budget is now waiting for approval from City Council. That funding would make the pool available for public use in summer 2012, paying for the demolition of the pump room and rebuilding it with new equipment.

Other plans for improvement include making concrete repairs and replacement, putting in new metal gutter grates, a new sand filter, electrical upgrades, fencing repairs and mechanical replacements.

The new proposal would waive the formal bid requirements and allow the mayor to accept informal competitive bids to pave the way for work to be completed in time for the pool to open on time, which is usually in mid-June.
