Council passes 2012 budget, adds 11 red light cameras

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – Toledo City Council unanimously approved the city's 2012 budget Tuesday.

The budget includes the addition of 11 new red light cameras, which will provide funding for city recreation programs, as well as a larger than planned police class.

"This takes us one step or two down the path of providing the city services that our budget is intended to provide," said Councilman Steven Steel.

Council diverted about $349,000 from the municipal court budget to fund a police class with 40 cadets starting on September 1.  The class had been set to include only 30 cadets and was not scheduled to begin until December.

"I'm still very pleased because we're talking 40 police officers starting September 1 in a class, rather than just 30 and I think it's absolutely imperative that we get as many police officers as we can, as quickly as we can to hit the streets," said Councilman George Sarantou.

The cameras will be located in west Toledo at the corner of Secor and Alexis, Talmadge and Monroe, and Bancroft and Reynolds. There will be two cameras in central Toledo at the corner of Detroit and Dorr and Collingwood and Dorr, along with two more at the corners of Heatherdowns and Byrne and the Anthony Wayne Trail and Glendale in south Toledo.

Council also approved amendments to hire an Executive Director of the Toledo Youth Commission and added $150,000 to the city's rainy day fun.  The budget was passed well in advance of the March 31 deadline.
