Kasich refuses to pressure Casino Commission to issue license

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – With the governor's visit to Toledo Express Airport focusing on new jobs in the area, Toledoans are left wondering when 1,200 employees will begin working at Hollywood Casino Toledo.

Everyone wants to know when the casino will open. Governor John Kasich said he has faith in the Casino Control Commission to issue a gaming license in a timely and responsible fashion.

The projected opening of the casino in April will likely be pushed back a few months. The Casino Commission is working through the process of conducting background checks on those with a financial stake in the casino operation.

Toledo city leaders are making adjustments to the budget plan based on the opening happening closer to the summer, rather than in the spring.

The governor said he is not going to put pressure on the Commission to issue a license any sooner than the process will allow.

"I don't tell the Casino Commission what to do. They have a set of procedures; you want to make sure they get through them appropriately. We don't want anyone dragging their feet at this point - I don't think they are. You want to do the proper background checks. You want to get everything in place so this will be successful," said Kasich.

The Casino Control Commission meets next week to discuss the situation at Hollywood Casino Toledo, which could include its opening date.
