WTOL11 Editorial: ‘Red Tails’ offers valuable lesson to younger Americans

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL EDITORIAL) - The premiere night for the movie Red Tails was special.  If you are not familiar with the movie it's based on the story of the Tuskegee Airmen.  They were the first African American pilots in World War II.

These brave young men had to overcome deeply entrenched racism in order to be granted the opportunity to fly in combat against the German forces.  Sitting in the theater that included surviving members of the original Tuskegee Air Corps, and surrounded by members of the 180th and their families, this night was about being proud to be an American.  This night was about celebrating determination and courage.  I wish the younger crowd would go see this instead of the stuff they waste time on.  Some ideals and beliefs are worth understanding and defending.  The Tuskegee Airmen knew this then, and all of the incredibly brave military members and their families know this today.  I'm afraid it is a lesson that is no longer being taught.
