PERRYSBURG TWP, OH (WTOL) – The holidays take a toll on those who are less fortunate in our area and some are resorting to panhandling to get through the season.
A local woman who asked WTOL to protect her identity told us that she's desperate to feed her family and put presents under the tree this year:
"It's quite embarrassing. Just have to deal with it, you know, you have to eat, to keep a roof over our head."
She has been unemployed for 11 months, and has two girls to support. She has stood at high traffic areas for 6 weeks, such as Thompson Rd. by Walgreens.
"You see some people laugh and some people drive by and say get a job. And other people will stop and help you and wish you well."
In recent weeks, Perrysburg Township has seen an increase in panhandling, and there is no ordinance against it.
"Typically we don't make contact with them unless of course we get a call, a compliant on them as far as being on someone else's property. A store calls that they are too close to the entrance, asking people for money for handouts." said Sgt. Matt Gazarek of the Perrysburg Township Police.
The woman's patience has paid off. Shoppers have given her cash, groceries, and gift cards.
Sgt. Gazarek says that if you want to help a person in need, cash may not be the best option. The person you are trying to help may be needy, but have a drug habit they are trying to support. He recommends food, toys, or gift cards.
