NorthTowne Mall purchase may pay off

NORTH TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – Some said it was a risk for the City of Toledo to acquire the property that was formerly NorthTowne Square Mall, tear it down, and sell it to a developer, but those people may soon be proven wrong.

Owners of business such as Miss Cue Billiards and Darts, which is right next to the property, are interested in expanding their customer base once the area that was formerly NorthTowne Square Mall gets some new life.

"The city doesn't always do everything the way it seems like they should but I think in this matter, they are at least going in the right direction with it" said Dan Martin, the owner of Miss Cue.

Brad Peebles, the Commissioner of Development for the city, told WTOL that he took officials from the Ohio Department of Development and the Ohio EPA on a tour of the property on Tuesday.

Peebles gave them a two hour tour inside and outside of the old mall, and the two organizations could help get the city additional funding for demolition and to entice a developer.

Peebles would not comment on any solid discussion of a deal, but he did say that "The conversations and calls we are fielding is a positive indication that there's a viable re-use of this property."

Key players from the existing Super Fitness have also taken tours of the property and may want to acquire more land for a possible expansion.

"I'm excited about that mall being torn down because I think good things are going to happen out here." Ron Hemelgarn, the owner of Super Fitness said.

Demolition is still three to four months away, but surrounding business owners are very positive.
