Fate of Woodville Mall will soon be decided

NORTHWOOD, OH (WTOL) – This may be the last holiday shopping season for Woodville Mall.

What used to be a great place to shop has turned into a giant mess for the city of Northwood.

The mall is extremely rundown.

Management has already told tenants to pack up and leave, which seems to be good advice, considering the condition of the building.

Inspectors say that even seeing a movie at the Fox Theater, located in the mall, could be hazardous to your health.

The floors are buckling because of the lack of heat, there is a putrid smell in the air due to the mold, and parts of the roof have collapsed.

Parts of the mall are roped off, and signs are in place to warn shoppers to stay back from the different dangers throughout the building.

With only ten stores and very low numbers of shoppers, Wood County Officials are considering closing the mall down, an action that they say they do not want to take.

The owner has not made any repairs, creating the possibility that the county prosecutor will seek an injunction to close the mall.

"He was gonna work things out with us, changed his tune on Friday, said had no money, couldn't make any repairs. And he said 'Do what you have to do." explained Mike Rudey, the Wood County Building Inspector.

Shoppers told us that they will be sorry to see the mall go.

The Andersons and Sears, both attached to the mall, say they plan to remain open for business.

A decision on the future of the decaying building is expected to be made sometime this week.
