Former NorthTowne mall to be redeveloped

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - The City of Toledo has its sights on the former NorthTowne Mall.

A plan presented to council calls for the city to acquire 69-acres of the mall property, tear down the vacant portions in hopes of redeveloping the land.

"It gives the neighborhoods around NorthTowne a real sense that good things are on the horizon, Couple this with the Jeep announcement and I think North Toledo has a reason to celebrate this weekend", says Councilwoman Lindsay Webb.

The Super Fitness facility would not be affected.

Details included in the legislation call for the current owners based in California to pat the city $70,000 for past due utility fees and code violation fines, and get current on property taxes, with the city using Brownfield Revolving Assistance Grant dollars to tear down the vacant portions, and then giving the owners the option to buy back the property for the cost of demolition.

"The idea we could have 69 acres to redevelop is a very exciting prospect for the economic development team of the mayor's administration", says Webb.

That prospect is encouraging for businesses in the area.

"To tear it down making the property something that Toledo wants. Whatever you build over there you're going to have jobs, you're going to create jobs", says Todd Kauffman with Grogan's Towne Chrysler.

It's not certain what will be built there, but Webb doubts that site has a future in retail:

"I see it unlikely to be redeveloped as a retail site. The most likely use would be light industrial."
