Lake high school more than half-way complete, ready for tour Saturday

LAKE TOWNSHIP, OH (WTOL) - The tornado that leveled Lake High School in June of 2010 didn't keep the district down for long.

Construction on the replacement school began soon after and is nearing completion and is ready for tours beginning this Saturday from 12:30 to 2:30.

The new Lake High School is 55 percent completed and will be finished in time for the start of the 2012 school year.

"It will be under roof by the wintertime so crews can work inside. It's on schedule. Pleased at the progress at this point," said Jim Witt, Lake Township district superintendent. "The end is in sight and it will be an exciting time for our kids, teachers, staff and community."

The school will be 144,000 square feet and have a two story atrium in addition to an 1,800 seat gym and 500-seat auditorium.

A new academic floor plan will feature 34 classrooms and a media center on the second floor

The total cost of the new high school is 25.5 million dollars. A new 4.75 mill, five year operating levy is on the November 8 ballot to help pay for the school and district officials want voters to know operating funds cannot be used for construction projects like the new high school.

"The high school will be paid for with insurance money, a grant from the Ohio School Facilities Commission and private donations," said Witt.

This year's Race for the Cure in Findlay is taking place right in the middle of a September heat wave. Temperatures at race time will be in the 70s. By midday expect temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s under bright sunshine. This would be a hot and oppressive day right in the middle of summer, let alone in late September.  Be sure to prepare for the conditions by drinking plenty of fluids and considering wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
